This chart element makes data trends easily visible, shows a forecast of activities based on the present dataset, and identifies anomalies in the collected data. Trendlines are added as a dashed line and match the color of the data series to which they’re assigned. You might want to format the trendline differently—especially if you have multiple trendlines on a chart. To occupy less space in the chart, Excel displays very few significant digits in a trendline equation.

This gives us an idea of what future values might be based on the current data trend. If you click the “Chart Elements” button to add a trendline without selecting a data series first, Excel asks you to which data series you want to add the trendline. Setting an Intercept for the Trendline

Instead, you must click on the Trendline arrow in the Chart Elements dialog to bring up the list of trendlines. Now, if you click on the Trendline element again, Excel shall delete the newly added trendline. Excel shall highlight the relevant data series in the input dataset. This is a smart and easy way to forecast future values based on the existing dataset’s trend. Excel trendline formulas should only be used with XY (scatter) graphs because only in this chart type both the y-axis and x-axis are plotted as numeric values. The polynomial curvilinear trendline works well for large data sets with oscillating values that have more than one rise and fall.
